As I write this people are having breakfast, packing up their things or heading to their final lecture or class. NC Symposium 2010 is almost over.

The final night of Symposium was the Iron Quilter event. It was crazy!!

The audience wore chef hats.

The judges were Elin Waterston, David Taylor and Laura Wasilowski.

The iron quilter contestants were Karen Stone and Robbi Joy Eklow.

The other teachers had a front row seat.

The atmosphere in "kitchen stadium" was electric. The iron quilters were up all kinds of hi jinks....silly string and whipped cream!! The judges turned out to be comedians. It was fun and crazy and let's just say that "What happens at Iron Quilter stays at Iron Quilter"

From all of the Symposium committee members here in Charlotte, we want to say thanks to all of you for coming to our Symposium. We hope you enjoyed yourself and will come back to visit our beautiful city soon.

Machine and Supply Check

Don’t want to tote your sewing gear back and forth between the
dorm and the Academic Center?

Then perhaps you would like to leave your belongings in the Academic Center before or after class, including overnight, in a secured CHECKROOM located on each workshop floor. Similar to a “coat-check,” you may leave your items and retrieve them at a later time by returning the check ticket provided.

These rooms will be open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on Friday and Saturday and from 8:00 am to 9:00 am Sunday. All materials must be picked up from this checkroom before 9:00 am Sunday, June 6.

Someone asked a question about the beds. They are regular twin size.

Sheets Towels Pillows

All that is provided is toilet paper.....These are college dorm rooms.

We don't want our parking lot to look like this .......

So I have a few things that are important for you to know

We have been able to lease a nearby parking deck.The parking deck is the best option for full time boarding students. It’s so close to where you will go in to class. You can leave your class supplies in your car until Friday morning and pick them up on the way to class. The deck has a security card and the lights are motion sensitive – there’s always light, but it goes to bright when you get close, so you’ll feel like a star being followed by a spot light as you walk thru the deck.

The deck costs $1 per 20 minutes, with a max of $10. If you drive in Thursday and don’t leave the deck until Sunday, it’s still only a max of $10 – that’s $2.50 per day. The first 100 cars with full-time boarding students will be given a voucher to park in the deck for free.

The parking lot where registration is, will only fit a few cars (like 30) So when you arrive we will have people there to greet you. You will to drop off all your stuff and we will keep it secure while you go park and then come back and check in.

Getting Our Rooms Ready

Yesterday was check-out at Johnson & Wales University. Students were showing their parents around campus, saying goodbye to friends, carrying boxes, students and parents were loading up their cars to head home for the summer – and to make room for us!!

We talked to the team at JWU Residential Life and they were already making plans to get the rooms ready for our event.

Getting ReadyTo Roll Out The Red Carpet

Good morning quilting friends. Sorry I haven't posted lately. I've gone back to work full time and I'm finding it a challenge to balance everything else in my life! I am in real estate so if you know someone who wants to buy or sell a home, I'd love to help.

Here in Charlotte we are excitedly working to get all the last minute details organized for our Symposium. A few of us are meeting this morning to get the final details "ironed " out for the Saturday night event, which is going to be a lot of fun.

We want all of you to have a wonderful time here in Charlotte and plan to "roll out the red carpet" while you are here.

Johnson and Wales is in the city. There are lots of restaurants nearby and the center of uptown is just minutes away, an easy and safe walk from the campus. If you've never been to Charlotte before I know you will enjoy it.

Several of us toured the facilitites at John and Wales the other day. I wish I'd thought to take pictures....
It is a great place to have symposium.
The food in the dining area smelled good.
It's just a short walk from the dorms to the dining room and classrooms.
There are lots of large "common room" areas with WiFi to hang out in.
Everything is state of the art. You can control your own A/C in your room.
The classrooms are very spacious and very well lit.
Only 2 months from now and we'll be there!
Can't wait! How about you?

Some went out but they weren't correct and will have to be resent. Others haven't been sent yet.

We just got our first look at the shirts we had designed for NC 2010 Symposium and I know when you see them you are going to want to get at least one! They are really good quality.

They come in khaki and there are 2 styles to choose from. Aren't they great?

The long sleeve are 55% cotton and 45% polyester and they have a nice soft feel to them.

The short sleeve area100 % cotton knit and are really nice too.

The logo was designed by Karen Ponischil, a member of the Charlotte Guild. Here is the logo on the long sleeve shirt.

Some Classes Are Full

Here in Charlotte we had our first taste of spring on the weekend and it was wonderful. As I write this I wonder if we are going to get that wintery mix that is forecast for today.

Registrations have been pouring in and a few of the classes are already full. So if you are planning to register I would suggest you do it soon.

It's In The Mail

"It's in the mail". You've heard that before. Maybe you've even said it before. It's that thing you say to avoid getting in trouble when you should have sent something but have put it off for whatever reason.

Well, it really is "in the mail".

The registration packages have been mailed and you can view them online January 26, which is the day we anticipate they will arrive in your mailbox.

Only 6 more days until you can mail them in!

I would love to see your reaction when you see the center page in our registration book. You're going to love it! As I said before, I don't know how you will decide which classes to take because they all look so fabulous.

So what does bread have to do with symposium? Well I'll let you in on a little secret. Can you keep a secret? We have something very special planned for you! Johnson & Wales is an incredible facility and we have created an amazing opportunity especially for you. Join Chef Peter Reinhart, recipient of the prestigious James Beard award and author of five books including American Pie, The Bread Baker’s Apprentice, Whole Grain Breads and Artisan Breads Everyday, as he demonstrates a variety of bread-baking techniques.

Both of these classes are exclusive for quilters, and he will be demonstrating in the high-tech amphitheater, Hance Auditorium. Each class is followed by a tasting reception and book signing.

CHEF DEMO #1 • June 4, 2010 • 2:30-5:30pm • Artisan Breads

This class focuses on new baking techniques for making artisan-quality breads without monopolizing all your time! Learn methods utilizing refrigeration as a way to slow down fermentation, allowing you to make doughs up to four days in advance of baking.

Using an array of toppings, including smoked cheeses, meats, and caramelized balsamic onions, will allow you to create customized pizzas to please every palate.

The countdown is on!!

It's almost time to register!!

January 29 is fast approaching!!

More than 10 women have been been writing, compiling, reviewing, proofing, editing, drinking lots of coffee and hopefully eating lots of chocolate as they double and triple checked the 100s of details... just for you!!

The registration book has been turned over to the printer and IT IS GORGEOUS

We have so many wonderful things planned for Symposium 2010!!

I know you want to get your registration in as quickly as possible so you can be sure to get your #1 class choice. I don't know how I will ever decide my first choice because they all look fabulous.

We are on schedule to have it in homes and posted on the web on January 26.

Teacher Velda Newman

The next teacher on our roster is Velda Newman.

Velda Newman is an internationally recognized contemporary quilt artist, author and lecturer from Northern California. Known for her large scale, mostly organic designs, Velda creates original quilts of exceptional beauty and craftsmanship. For the past 18 years Velda's work has appeared in many national and international exhibitions and has been featured in over 30 publications, including Quilter's Newsletter and Threads magazine. She lives in Northern California and is the mother of 4 and the grandmother of 10.

Teacher David Taylor

The next teacher in our line up is David Taylor. We are pleased to have a male teacher this year!

Here is a little background about David:
"About my quilts... My first quilt design was a collaboration with my friend and long-arm quilter Madeleine Vail. We finished our quilt in 2000 and it sold at a fund-raiser auction for $25,000. I was hooked. Who knew I would be still be doing this a decade later. Quilting has consumed my life, and fabric has consumed my home. I'm not one for stepping out of my box very often, but in 2006 I did convert to hand-applique, which I now love. I'm still machine quilting, as it is impossible to separate me from my Bernina 160. There is nothing more fulfilling to me than machine quilting. I'm now traveling the country lecturing and conducting workshops and having the time of my life."
David will teach a class on Pictorial Applique and give a lecture titled Reluctant Journey.

Teacher Carol Taylor

Another wonderful speaker we have lined for Symposium up is Carol Taylor.

Internationally known, award-winning quilt artist, Carol Taylor, approaches her quilt making with intensity and a seemingly boundless energy. Vibrant colors, striking contrasts, use of value, as well as heavy machine quilting and embroidery distinguish Carol’s quilts. She has created over 490 quilts since she began quilting in 1993.

Carol will teach a class called Value of Value:

Learn how to use VALUE to make your quilts stand out and “flow” from light to dark, while making a long skinny quilt (vertical or horizontal) for that special place on your wall? (Or maybe even create a table runner.)

This quilt will measure 14 x 57 or 14 x 71. This class is based on a project for a new book Carol has been invited to be in, and will emphasize a simple, hands-on method of learning to use value and make it “flow” in your quilts. The photo here shows a horizontal orientation, but you can hang it vertically too. It is fused patchwork with couched circles, similar to my Arc-i-Texture class, but mostly it will teach you how to use value and create “flow” in your quilts!

This is a chance to use some of those fancy and unusual fabrics that you’ve been attracted to, but didn’t know how to use. We will tame them by fusing, and learn to mix them with other textured looking fabrics. And you won’t need much of any one fabric---even scraps will do!

You’ll learn a bit about composition, and how to balance it with both color and size, and use value to make your design “flow”. You’ll learn about fusing and how to finish your quilts with facings instead of bindings. And Carol will also teach you how to quilt and couch those “perfect” circles that have almost become a trademark on her quilts.

Carol will also give a lecture titled Sew Many Quilts, So Little Time.

She calls herself The Goddess of the Last Minute. Her real name is Robbi Joy Eklow and she will be one of our teachers at the 2010 Symposium.You can read all about Robbi on her website, here.

Another teacher we are pleased to have is Cynthia Corbin. She will teach a class titled STRUCTURE AND VARIATION and do a lecture also.

How are you today? Are you working on any interesting projects right now? I get lots of sewing done this time of year because when the temperature is hot, I stay inside where it's cool!

We now have many of the teachers confirmed for 2010 symposium so I can tell you who they are.

The first one is Charlotte Angotti, a teacher from SC.

She will teach a class called LET ME SUPRISE YOU and also do a lecture

We had our guild meeting last night and Patti was giving updates on plans for symposium. There has been lots of excitement and many of you are already asking about registration packets. We are still getting signed contracts back from teachers and I don't have the final list yet but here is our tentative teacher list:

Everyone knows location location location are the three most important words in real estate.
Well we think that we 've got that covered with the location for Nothing Could Be Finer, the North Carolina 2010 Quilt Symposium. It's going to be at Johnson and Wales right in the heart of Uptown Charlotte. Click here for a tour of the campus.
